media reporting on research a little hard to swallow
Coffee drinkers rejoice! If you abusing your heart with six or more cups of java per day, then congratulations, you are likely to live longer than your non coffee drinking counterparts. Apparently.
If you were sipping your latte over the morning news today, you may have noticed theeruption of stories online about a US study finding that drinkers live longer It all over Twitter. And in truth, it probably isn What most of the reports fail to make clear is that this is a correlative finding, that is, a correlating connection was found between two trends: coffee consumption and deaths of participants since the conduction of a study in 1996. The main limitation of a correlation study is that there no evidence of a cause effect relationship. In the original study, there was one question on the questionnaire that asked participants about their coffee consumption habits, and no follow up on participants retention of the habit. Just a blatant claim based on a weak potential connection.
The media has a habit of doing this. A Cheap Nike Air Max 2016 lot. Reporting on studies is not transparent enough, with many reports neglecting to mention study sizes or design and failing to contextualise results. I get it, research is dry. It can be as bland as reading the stock market report while eating a cottage cheese sandwich, so when something slightly juicy is found, you can bet news outlets are going to squeeze out every last drop, and damn the full disclosure of facts!
Opening a report with show creates a sense of validity, but readers need to be cautious and skeptical. We need to ask, how many studies have been conducted? What was the sample size? How applicable is this research? What does Nike Air Max 2016 past research show?
Saying that citrus fruit is more likely to reduce risks of stroke, for example, is apretty big claim and the media has a responsibility to verify this by providing all the details of a study before jumping to a conclusion.
Does doing this make the story less interesting, pointless even? Sure. But the media has the Cheap Nike Air Max 2016 responsibility to warn us that chugging coffee like holy water is perhaps not the best idea.
A really enjoyable, well written and considered post. It would have been good to include a sentence or two about why too much coffee isn good for your health, rather than making readers click through to find out why. Same goes for the par talking about media reporting on correlation studies lot You at least need to refer to the report you have linked to, to make it clear where you are getting your subsequent opinions from. |
