Labor Day was signed into law by president Grover Cleveland in 1894 to acknowledge the reconciliation of society with the labor movement –that had fostered widespread strikes in which violence occurred. President Grover Cleveland wanted to honor the labor force and quiet the strident voices of union leaders. Some of these leaders were at times extreme in their demands.
